Jazzy/experimental Funk. 'make them Like It' is an Exhilarating, Wide Eyed Concoction that Incorporates a Melange of Styles Including Elements of Jazz-fusion, Soul, Drum 'n Bass; Latin Flavored Grooves, Ragga, Funk and Spoken-word Musings.
Some albums do exactly what they say on the sleeve. Well, the Brooklyn Funk Essentials are an 11-piece band who are indeed based in Brooklyn (even though they do include numerous nationalities), do have the funk and, given half a chance, will definitely make you like them. The opening track has what it takes; dynamic bustling drums and bass, slick horns and an up tempo feel-good vibe. There's a celebratory mix up of slinky Cuban and gruff Jamaican rhythms that is "Mambo Con Dancehall" but the album really kicks off though on the vocal tracks. The Brooklyn Funk essentials count among their number a couple of dub and slam poets, plucked from the coolest New York clubs. "Date With My Baby" and "I Got Cash" feature what are quite possibly the best lyrics of the year: very pointed, wickedly funny, deadly accurate, delivered over slick, boiling point funk with more cool, suss and style than is strictly scientifically possible. Make Them Like It"span" is an essential release.--Robert Heller
